Review - 314 by A.R. Wise

Alma Harper has been trying to forget what happened in Widowsfield 16 years ago. She has a good life as a music teacher now, and might rekindle her relationship with her one true love. However, the number 314 haunts her, and threatens to bring her back to the day that her brother disappeared. When a reporter shows up, just days before March 14th, Alma realizes that her past is coming back to haunt her. What happened on March 14th, at 3:14, 16 years ago? No one but The Skeleton Man can remember.

Review - I liked this story. It caught my interest. I am not very invested in the characters but the story line has me. At times it feels like a cross between a Scooby Doo mystey and Blair Witch. There were intense moments of monologue that got me to giggle. The very end, it felt to me like a game show decision that must be made by the contestant. It didn't feel life threatening, it was comical.

May be it's my own sensibility not trust a demonic enity as far as I can throw them, but, dumb characters do. Why in the world would anyone believe what a demon told them anyway. There is no demonic honor system.

Despite these problems, I genuinely liked the story. Will I continue with the series? No. The first one was enough. I enjoyed it and time to move on.

Review - 1917 by Basil Sands @AlaskaBasil

Free for a Limited Time,
Click Now on the Cover Photo.

In the summer of 1914 the world erupted in what was at the time called The Great War. Machine guns, multi-ton bombs, poison gas, changed the face what war had been like for thousands of years. Rendered it a hell like nothing the world had ever seen. In a single battle, The Somme 1916, over a million soldiers were killed or wounded. By the time it ended four years and four months later more than sixteen million people lay dead, empires collapsed and national borders had been realigned. It was thought that after such inhumane cruelty and barbarity as was seen on the battlefields of France, Belgium, Turkey, and other lands spanning the globe, that the world had come its senses. That humanity had finally fought The War to End All Wars. A short generation later The War to End All Wars was renamed, World War One. Because mankind had apparently learned nothing.
This short story is not a history. It is not a precise representation of facts, places, dates or large scale events. It is merely the story of the First World War through the eyes of an innocent nineteen year old Canadian boy from the prairies of Alberta. He and the youthful soldiers with him had no concept of the scale of what they were involved in, no clue as to what lay in the heads of the generals and politicians that sent the orders down. He didn’t read the newspapers, didn’t philosophize on the meaning of it all. He had no ‘big picture’ as the history books paint for us today. All he understood was that he had to obey his orders and stop the Hun. The only picture he saw was one of mud, and sweat, and rats, and blood. He was soldier whose orders had called his unit out of the comforts of Paris, and sent them to a field near a little Belgian town called Paschendale.

Review - At 18 pages, this is a short story. Packed with tons of action and set at a lightning pace with an excellent twist at the end.  They say there are no atheists in fox holes and that's where Sands uses to his advantage in telling this slice of life story.

This is just a peek into Sands story telling ability. I've read many of Sands books and loved every one.
